Physiotherapy for Neck Pain in Stamullen

The neck, or cervical spine, is made up of seven vertebrae along with discs, joints, muscles, ligaments and nerves. It supports the head, allows us to look and move in different directions, and protects the spinal cord and the nerves that travel to the shoulders and arms.

Neck pain can therefore present in different ways. Some people experience a local ache or stiffness, while others may develop headaches or symptoms of pins and needles or numbness into the arm. In many cases there is no serious damage, and symptoms improve with the right combination of movement, exercise and a gradual return to normal activity.

Common causes of neck pain

Irritation or repetition

Nerve or muscular irritation from unfamiliar activity, heavier training, repeated lifting or long periods looking down can make the muscles and joints of the neck sensitive.

Whiplash or trauma

A rapid movement of the head and neck during a collision, fall or sporting incident can irritate several tissues at once.

Age-related changes

Changes in the discs and small joints of the neck become more common with age. They do not always cause pain, but they can contribute in some people.

Stress, sleep and recovery

Stress, poor sleep and fatigue can increase muscle tension and make an already sensitive neck more likely to flare.

How we treat neck pain at The Physio Ward

At The Physio Ward in Stamullen, treatment starts with understanding your individual presentation. We assess neck and upper-back movement, strength and posture during relevant tasks and, where needed, the nerves and muscles of the arm.

Treatment may include targeted mobility and strengthening exercises, hands-on joint or soft-tissue techniques to help with pain and stiffness, and nerve-mobility exercises. We also look at the activities that matter to you - whether that is desk work, driving, lifting, training or sport - and gradually build your tolerance back up.

We don't want to only provide short-term relief. We want to help you understand your neck, restore comfortable movement and build enough strength and capacity to reduce future flare-ups.

What can I do to help with neck pain?

Simple changes can often help settle neck pain and keep you moving:

  • Keep your neck moving - Gentle, comfortable movement through the day is usually better than avoiding movement completely.

  • Change position regularly - If you work at a desk or drive for long periods, take short movement breaks rather than trying to hold one “perfect” posture.

  • Use heat if it feels helpful - A warm shower or heat pack can relax sore muscles and make movement more comfortable.

  • Build strength gradually - Strengthening the neck, upper back and shoulders can improve your capacity for work, sport and everyday tasks.

  • Prioritise sleep and recovery - Poor sleep and high stress can make pain feel more sensitive, so a consistent sleep routine can be useful.

Get assessed by a qualified physiotherapist or athletic therapist if your symptoms aren’t settling, or if you begin to experience pain travelling into the arm, pins and needles, numbness or weakness. These symptoms are worth assessing to identify the cause and ensure you receive the right treatment.

For a personalised neck pain plan, book a consultation at The Physio Ward in Stamullen. We’ll identify what is contributing to your symptoms and build a programme to improve movement, strength and confidence.
